A potty update

Well it’s been almost two months since we had our Potty Day and made the switch to underwear. It’s been a long and bumpy road and we are still riding the ride! Noah is doing really well with peeing in the potty. At first, I would have to remind him every 15-20 minutes to go. But now, he will say “Mommy, I have to go potty!” or sometimes he will just go to the potty all by himself! He rarely has a tee-tee accident at home now (school and church are a different story some days, though!) Last night, he even started standing up to pee! :)

But then there’s the poo.

I can count on one hand the times I have personally seen Noah poop in the potty. He just won’t do it. He will go in his undies and then will either tell me he did it or I’ll smell it. It is SO frustrating. He has always had poop issues, ever since he was a baby. We have tried EVERYTHING to get him to poop in the potty…rewarding him with candy or stickers or toys when he even attempts to poop in the potty, punishing him for pooping in his underwear (spanking, time-out, or no tv), sitting him on the potty for 30 minutes at a time while reading a book or playing on the iPhone, telling him how much we dislike washing poopy underwear, telling him that big boys poop in the potty, letting him watch us take a poo and then watch it go down as we flush (gross! ha!), not saying anything when he poops in his undies and just changing him, etc. You name it, we’ve done it. And if you ask him why he poops in his underwear, he says “I don’t know.” He knows he’s supposed to do it on the potty, he just won’t.

I talked to his pediatrician about his lack of pooping in the potty and she suggested that he may be holding it in because he doesn’t want to go in the potty, therefore making him constipated. So we tried giving him Miralax and that just gave him diarrhea!

So right now, we are sending two changes of clothing a day to preschool (after two accidents, they put a pull-up on him for the remainder of the day) and doing a whole lot of laundry. I’m really at a loss on this one. Should I just be patient and pray that one day it will click with him? Or is there something else I can do? Another problem I have is that he can’t move up to the next room at preschool in August if he isn’t completely potty trained so I feel pressured to make sure he is 100% trained by then.

HELP! Any and all advice is welcome! :)

I have no advice because I haven't been through this yet but I am DREADING it. You've done everything I've ever read as things to do when potty training, so I have no idea what else you could do. Maybe one day it will just click with him. Hoping for the best for you and Noah :)

This is going to sound REALLY crazy BUT I am a nanny and we were having the same problem. Then we were in the target bathroom and a mom was changing her very new baby and said babies go poop on their diapers and he freaked! Lol but I am not a baby! I am a big boy! Ever since he saw visually that a crying baby gets his diaper changed and not a big boy...he got it! Night not work for everyone but it did work for him (at 3 1/2).

My sister just went through this with my nephew. He would never poop in the potty, always in a pull up. They bought pull ups for months so that he would go. He would hold it for days if they had to go in the potty. Then one day it "clicked". My sister told my nephew that the store was out of red pull ups, the ones he would poop in and it just worked. Now that there are no pull ups in the house except bedtime ones, it has helped tons. My nephew will be 4 in July.
